Steve and Cookie's is located on Monroe Avenue and the bay in Margate. The structure built in 1936, once housed the "infamous" Strotbecks', a private dining club.
Steve and Cookie's is open for dinner every night all year long, demonstrating our belief that Margate City can come to be known as more than just a seasonal town. Staying open has paid off with strong local support that sustains us through the long winter months. Every night we feature some of the best jazz musicians on the island,, in our piano room. We also have a classic Ash bar that locals love to congregate around. And in the winter you can smell the inviting scent from our two working fireplaces even before you enter our building. Then there's the "Verandah", our 100-seat dining room with 11 ft. windows overlooking the inland waterway. It is definitely the place "to be seen" in the summer months. Our newest addition is the Oyster Bar, a separate room with its own entrance. The "OB" has become "home" to many. Whether you are just getting a quick bite at the bar or meeting a group of friends the atmosphere is warm and inviting and the 'no reservation' policy fits well with many peoples lifestyle. Altogether, Steve and Cookie's seats 220 guests in five distinct dining areas.
We feel our menu compliments the simple elegance of our dining rooms. I,along with my Chef, CIA graduate, Kevin Kelly and ACC Culinary Institute graduate and sous chef Warner Christy decided on keeping our menu simple using the freshest seafood and produce and the best cuts of meat. In summer we feature Whole Steamed Maine lobster, soft-shell crabs and Jersey blueberry pie. In winter months we get excited about serving heartier meals such as Osso Bucco with truffle smashed potatoes, crispy roast duck with bourbon sweet potatoes, risotto's and stick to your rib stews. Every Thursday night we celebrate our favorite holiday, Thanksgiving, with a turkey dinner with all the trimmings! PLus check out our other weekly specials featured all winter in our menu section.
A Linwood native, Warner R. Christy IV brings his talent to Steve and Cookie's by the Bay after years of practicing his craft at some of Atlantic County's finest dining places. A graduate of the Culinary Academy at ACCC Warner began his career in Atlantic City casinos where he discovered his passion for creating culinary masterpieces. Warner and Cookie forged their relationship in 1993 at the Crab Pot until the restaurant closed in 1998. Warner continued to hone his skills in other fine dining establishments in the area. Their relationship resumed again in 1999 upon the opening of Steve and Cookie's and continues to grow, bound by their mutual obsession with all things culinary. Warner enjoys the challenge of the kitchen continually striving to keep the menu fresh and ahead of the curve, while staying true to his principles of simplicity and quality ingredients. When the opportunity arises to escape the heat of the kitchen, Warner can be found riding his Harley with his wife Jen, vacationing and creating culinary delights for friends and family.
Chef Kevin Kellys' passion for the Culinary Arts began long before he graduated at the top of his Class from the prestigious Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park. Growing up in the seaside community of Margate NJ he began his foray into the culinary field working the summers, beginning at a very young and impressionable age, at a restaurant called The Crab Pot. The restaurant was owned by Steve Till. This relationship with Steve and later with Cookie as well, would eventually come full circle. While still at the CIA he interned with Chef Robert Brunton at the Pier House in Key West Florida. Kevin's graduation from the CIA happened to coincide with the boom of Casinos in Atlantic City and Kevin found himself back in familiar territory when asked to be part of the culinary team opening the Trump Plaza Hotel and Casino He went on to work as a sous chef there for four years.
Then in 1988 he took on the challenge of banquet sous chef at the Pier 66 hotel in Fort Lauderdale, catering to celebrities, yachtsmen, and discerning palates. Kevin's ties to Margate were strong and he found himself back in Margate, if only for the summers, this time as head chef at the Crab Pot. Although this was not the Crab Pot of his youth. There was a new location and with Kevin's capable help a new menu that raised the bar of dining "at the Shore". Then in 1996 Steve and Cookie purchased and renovated a ramshackle old building formally know as Strotbecks and ironically directly across from their old location. Kevin was finally able to quite his seasonal commute to Florida with the opening of Steve and Cookie's by the Bay because it was to become a year round dining destination. Now Kevin could have a place to call home. And after 10 years he continues to raise the bar of fine dining at the shore. Kevin resides in Northfield with his wife Carol. He has two children Colleen and Luke.
